The Purported Benefits and Side Effects of Detox Teas. A healthy diet is an important part of a balanced life. There are so many different types of fads and ways to improve your body, that it can be easy to overlook what is in the things you’re eating and drinking. Detoxes are a pretty popular way to get back on track. But sometimes while trying to keep the bad stuff out, we forget to research what it is we’re putting in. On the surface, a lot of things that appear to be helpful, can actually be quite harmful. Even something as old and as calming as tea, can hide some pretty serious stuff. If you’re looking to go on a tea detox, you might want to think twice before letting whatever you’re drinking steep.

Summary:
Now , relax and get ready to learn about the potential side effects of a tea detox. And don’t worry, we’re not checking to see what you’re sipping while you watch this video.

For starters, it’s important to note that tea detoxes aren’t regulated by the FDA. That’s right, you know the government agency who keeps food safe and makes sure to list exactly what is in your food and drugs? Well, they don’t check in on what companies claim will benefit you in their teas. So a company could sell you a miracle tea bag with “detoxifying” elements, but it could actually contain toxic or allergy-triggering ingredients. So much for that natural remedy.

Often times, people will go on a tea detox to lose weight. Green tea is one example of a “go to” for weight loss. However, there is much more research that needs to be done before the effects of green tea are fully understood. What researchers do know is that green tea contains chemicals called “catechins” which appear to increase the fat burned when you exercise. But it’s important to note that weight loss during a tea detox with exercise, may not be because of the tea but because of the physical activity.

That’s the thing about losing weight, you do have to exercise. Unfortunately there’s no magic pill, powder or tea that’s going to get you your ideal body type. It takes work, and most of these detoxing weight loss teas will recommend pairing their drinks with a balance of healthy eating, plenty of exercise and consuming lots of water. So you gotta wonder…is it the tea helping you to lose weight? Or just that healthy lifestyle you’ve adopted.

It’s always important to check the ingredients of anything you’re putting into your body, but then something like these detox teas claim to have a large effect on your body, without being regulated by the FDA, that should probably raise some red flags. When you have teas that claim things like weight loss, it may not be weight you’re losing, but water. Water is heavy and when you flush it out, you can see big results fast. But those results might not last very long, and they might not be very healthy. After all we humans are made up of about 60-70% water. Once you stop drinking that tea that’s probably got some kind of laxative effect to it, you’ll most likely gain the weight back.

Some of the unregulated ingredients in detox teas can have even worse side effects than weight loss. According to Healthline, some of the chemicals in detox teas can cause heart attacks, strokes, and seizures. In some rare, extreme cases detox teas have even killed people.

Some of the more commonly claimed benefits of detox teas is the “cleansing” effects they have on the body by acting as a laxative or a diuretic. Detox teas tend to contain herbs such as black pepper, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and turmeric, which, it is claimed, can help to boost the body’s immune system and improve metabolism. Some purport that the ingredients in detox teas are designed to give you energy. Detox teas are a widely sold product marketed to help your body expel toxins. In reality, many detox teas just lead to water weight loss by sending you to the bathroom more often. In this case, emptying your colon and bladder often may result in a small amount of weight loss. And while these teas may contain chemicals meant to “speed” you up (like ephedra, for example) and therefore, seemingly, give you more energy to be more active (a better way to lose weight), they can cause dangerous internal issues.

It is also claimed by some that these teas help your body maintain a healthy liver. Your liver plays an integral role in detoxifying your body of harmful elements.
